Benin detected 243 cases of leprosy out of an estimated population of 9 million, an equivalent of 0.26 people in every 10,000 inhabitants, according to the coordinator for the national program for the fight against leprosy.

An appellate court in Benin should overturn the conviction and toss out a prison sentence handed to the director of a private television stationlast week in connection with a broadcast of a press conference in September in which a former presidential adviser criticized President Boni Yayi, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

President of Benin Thomas Yayi Boni succeeded Equatorial Guinea's President Theodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo as the rotating president of the African Union for one year, announced the AU at its 18th summit on Sunday in Addis Ababa.
