Normalcy returns to Kinshasa after Friday’s tension |

Calm has reportedly returned in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, where a tense atmosphere prevailed Friday when the police security forces barred supporters of opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi from heading to the Martyrs Stadium where their mentor had planned to take his oath of office as the country’s President-elect.

After several attempts to attain the qualification point of the very poor and indebted countries (PPTE), the Republic of Congo is at the crossroads of debt pardon of 1,400 billion FCFA (2.8 billion U. S. dollars) from its future payments of debt totaling an estimated 3,500 billion FCFA (7 billion dollars).

Security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo have killed some 500 political opponents over the past two years, with the full knowledge of the highest echelons of power, according to Human Rights Watch. The Kinshasa government rejected the allegations.
