Casualties reported in northern Mali suicide attacks |

Suicide bomb attacks caused casualties in northern Mali on Thursday and Friday, the latest in a series launched by rebels this month apparently in a counter- offensive to the Malian army and its allies, according to local sources.

EU training mission in Mali launched |

The Council today launched the EU mission to support the training and reorganisation of the Malian Armed Forces. An advance party has arrived in Bamako on 8 February and will start the expertise and advisory tasks in the coming days. Military instructors are planned to be deployed before the end of March.

Germany announces further humanitarian aid for Mali |

Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle announced today (16 January) in Berlin that the German Government will provide an additional one million euros in humanitarian aid to Mali. The funds will be made available to Welthungerhilfe to help relieve the suffering of refugees from Mali.

The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Mrs. Salamatu Hussaini Suleiman says it would be "dangerous" to rely on dialogue as the sole strategy for resolving the crisis in Mali sparked by the takeover of the north of the country by Islamists and secessionists.
