Egyptian traders welcome to China's Canton Fair: official

A senior Chinese trade official said here on Tuesday Egyptian traders are welcome to attend the 110th Canton Fair scheduled for October in China's southern Guangzhou city.

Wen Zhongliang, deputy secretary general of the foreign trade department of China's Ministry of Commerce, told Egyptian entrepreneurs that Chinese commodities maintained their competitiveness with good quality and fair prices.

China is becoming an important global market for consumer goods and a key factor for the increase of exports of many countries, said Wen at a promotion conference in Cairo. The fair is also known as the China Import and Export Fair.

"Therefore, the growing Chinese market also offers opportunities for Egyptian exporters," he added.

In 2010, the value of Chinese exports to Egypt was 6.04 billion U.S. dollars, 18.2 percent up year-on-year. In the first five months this year, Chinese exports to Egypt reached 2.42 billion U. S.dollars, while its imports from Egypt hit 790 million U.S. dollars.

At the 109th Canton Fair held from April 15 to May 5 this year, more than 2,200 Egyptian businessmen attended the fair and bought goods worth 440 million U.S. dollars, Wen said.

According to the Chinese official, Egypt has become China's fifth largest trade partner in Africa.

Sameh Zaki, member of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, told Xinhua that Canton Fair is a world-famous one and especially important for Egyptian companies.

Egyptian traders attend the fair every year and hope to expand exports of goods like marble, garment and cotton to China via the fair, Zaki said.

He also expected the fair to serve as a platform for the cooperation of companies of the two countries.

The Canton Fair began in 1957 and is held twice a year. The 110th Canton Fair will be held from Oct.15 to Nov.4.
