| The former Liberian leader, Charles Taylor, was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment for committing crimes during the civil war in Sierra Leone between 1991 and 2002, the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) in Leidschendam announced on Wednesday.

The 64-year-old Taylor, who was convicted on April 26, will serve his sentence in Great Britain.
The SCSL prosecutors had demanded a jail term of 80 years for Taylor.
Taylor was convicted for murder, (sexual) slavery, the recruitment and use of child soldiers, trafficking of blood diamonds and terrorism, as aider and creator of the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF).
It is the first time that a former head of state has been convicted by an international court.
In March 2006 Taylor was arrested in Nigeria. His trial started in June 2007.
From 1997 to 2003 Taylor was the president of the West African country Liberia, which is adjacent to Sierra Leone.
