DR Congo army suspends military operations in rebellion-hit North Kivu

Military operations to track down indisciplined soldiers in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) have been suspended, according to the Central African nation's army chief.


In a statement released on Sunday, the army chief said FARDC already controlled the entire Masisi territory and a section of the Rutshuru territory and that more than 70 defectors from the army have surrendered to the DR Congo Armed Forces (FARDC).

The FARDC army chief gave a five-day ultimatum to those who had deserted the army to rejoin FARDC ranks.

The operation was launched last week and lasted four days to neutralize soldiers still loyal to Bosco Ntanganda, who defected from the army after learning that he may be transferred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

The fighting between indisciplined and loyalist soldiers has displaced more than 500,000 people.
