Guinea Bissau elections held under free, transparent conditions: ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lauded the March 18 presidential elections in Guinea Bissau, saying the polls were conducted under acceptable conditions of freedom and transparency.

Gen. Salou Djibo, head of the ECOWAS Observation Mission to Guinea Bissau, said in the capital Bissau Monday that the mission observed orderliness prevailing throughout the voting process and the availability of adequate voting materials in most of the polling stations, according to a statement reaching Xinhua here on Tuesday.

Djibo commended the timely commencement of polls throughout the country, noting that the high turnout of voters to exercise their civic responsibilities was good.

He also praised the professionalism of electoral officers, the varying presence of representatives of candidates in most of the polling stations, the patrol of law enforcement officers around most of the polling areas as well as the smooth process of counting and collating of votes in accordance with the country's electoral law.

According to Djibo, there were no major obstacles or incidents likely to affect the regularity of the voting process.
